IELTS Writing Task 1 and Present Perfect
Because one important use of the present perfect is to describe how things have changed over a period leading up to the present day, we often use the present perfect when we are asked to write a description of information given in a line graph in Task 1 of the IELTS Writing module. You can only use the present perfect if the graph takes you up to the present day.

The chart below shows the percentage of young people taking part in different outdoor sports from 1990 to the present day in the South West of England.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The graph shows that over the past 30 years in the South West of England there has been a in the percentage of young people who take part in certain outdoor sports. However, not all outdoor sports have become less popular.
Over the period, the most significant has been in the percentage of young people who play ball games — this has fallen by almost 15%, from 34 to 20%, with the biggest since 2005. There has also been a of 9% in the percentage of young people who ride bikes and roller skate, from 25 to 16%.
However, there has been a steady in the percentage of young swimmers. In 1990 it was the third most popular sport and now it is the most popular. The percentage of young people who jog has over the period — 13% in 2000, falling to 9% in 2010 and then rising again to 15% in the present day.
